Welcome to the Broughton Global Studies/Language Immersion Magnet High School International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme website!
Broughton is a comprehensive high school located in downtown Raleigh, NC, USA. As one of the most historic schools in our state, we have a rich history, strong legacy, and wonderful community support. We are also growing into an exciting future!
Broughton is a Global Studies & Language Immersion magnet school, and the IB Diploma Programme is a central opportunity that is available to all Broughton 11th and 12th grade students. Broughton is Magnet Schools of America Nationally Certified Demonstration School and has offered the IB Diploma Programme since 2002.
Our Vision:
Through rigorous and innovative lessons that invite risk-taking and critical thinking, Broughton students will become global citizens who value diversity, collaborate effectively, and share their talents to improve the world.
IB Mission and Context
The International Baccalaureate Organization, a non-profit educational foundation based in Switzerland, has authorized nearly 6,000 schools across the world. The IB offers the Diploma Programme for students in the final two years of high school. The program provides engaging and challenging coursework that emphasizes the development of excellent depth of understanding, critical thinking, writing, and research across a broad range of subject areas.
IB Mission:
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
IB Learner Profile
The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
IB learners strive to be:
Inquirers
They develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning, and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.
Knowledgeable
They explore concepts, ideas, and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.
Thinkers
They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems, and they make reasoned, ethical decisions.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The IB emphasizes why, what, and how students learn. The following skills and approaches are emphasized throughout the IB curriculum.
Approaches to learning:
Thinking skills--analysis, evaluation, application, problem-solving
Communication--production and communication of messages and meaning
Social skills--participation, collaboration, intercultural understanding, respect for differences
Research skills--finding, generating, and sharing information ethically and effectively
Self-management skills--goal setting, time management, motivation, resilience
