Unit 6: Making Connections to Decimal Notation

Vocabulary

  • Decimal Point : A point (small dot) used to separate the whole number part from the fractional part of a number.

    • Example: in the number 36.9 the point separates the 36 (the whole number part) from the 9 (the fractional part, which really means 9 tenths). So 36.9 is 36 and nine tenths.

  • Tenths: One part in ten equal parts. Example: one tenth of 50 is 5

  • Hundredths: One part in a hundred equal parts. 1/100th

    • Example: 1 cent is a hundredth of 1 dollar

  • Decimal: "Decimal number" is often used to mean a number that uses a decimal point followed by digits that show a value smaller than one.

    • Example: 45.6 (forty-five point six) is a decimal number.

  • Equivalent: Having the same value.

  • Place Value: The value of where a digit is in the number.

    • Example: In 352, the 5 is in the "tens" place, so its place value is 10

    • Example: In 17.591, the 9 is in the "hundredths" place, so its place value is 0.01

  • Whole: All of something. Complete.

  • Base Ten System: Another name for the decimal number system that we use every day.

  • Number Line: A line with numbers placed in their correct position.

  • Equations: An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign "=" like this: 7 + 2 = 10 − 1. That equation says: what is on the left (7 + 2) is equal to what is on the right (10 − 1)

  • Area Model: A model where fractions are represented as parts of an area or region
