Vocabulary
Equivalent: Having the same value
Equal Parts: Parts that are exactly the same amount or value
Fraction: How many parts of a whole:
The top number (the numerator) says how many parts we have.
The bottom number (the denominator) says how many equal parts the whole is divided into
Numerator: The top number in a fraction. Shows how many parts we have.
Denominator: The bottom number in a fraction. Shows how many equal parts the item is divided into.
Equal Shares: Where everyone
Whole: All of something. Complete.
Unit Fraction: A fraction where the top number (the "numerator") is 1.
Example: 1/4 (one quarter), which has a numerator of 1
Partition: to cut or to break apart into equal pieces
Equivalent Fraction: Fractions which have the same value, even though they may look different.
Example 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent, because they are both "half"
Tape Diagram: Also known as a bar model, is when a long rectangle is partitioned to show fractional pieces
Number Line: A line with numbers placed in their correct position.
Greater Than: Having more value
Less Than: Having less value
Equal to: Having the same value
Value: how much a diagram, a set, or a piece represents or is worth
Area Model: A model where fractions are represented as parts of an area or region
Benchmark Fractions: Fractions that can be used as references such as 1/4,1/2, 3/4, 1
