Vocabulary

  • data: a collection of information gathered by observation, questioning or measurement.

    • numerical data: data that is measurable and represented by a number such as time, height, weight, amount, and so on

    • categorical data: data that is described by a word such as a person's gender, hometown, or the types of movies they like

  • survey: a method of collecting a sample of data by asking people questions

  • frequency table: a table used in statistics that organizes data as an ordered list of scores and how often they occur.

  • scale: measuring data in a standard increasing amount

  • scaled bar graph: a graph using bars to show quantities or numbers so they can be easily compared.

  • line plot: a number line long enough to cover all numbers in a data set,showing a dot, cross or mark over the position of each number. If there is more than one dot, cross or mark falls in the same position,they are stacked up.
