The main goals of the STEM Academy including our Mission Statement are outlined in the graphic below. The ADMHS STEM Academy is meant to be a supplemental addition to student's educations, not remove them from the Athens student community as a whole, thus providing students with a STEM education while still offering the full range of classes and opportunities available at a WCPSS high school.
In order to graduate from the STEM Academy, students must:
Complete the STEM Academy Application and be accepted into the Energy and Sustainability Academy
Complete and submit a Student Contract to Mrs. Doran (available HERE)
Complete all cohorted classes per grade level
Earn sufficient STEM Points each school year (info available on STEM Points Tab)
Complete the group Class Project assigned each school year (info available on the Class Projects tab)
Complete one of the offered STEM Pathways before the end of senior year (info available below)
Successfully complete the STEM Capstone course in the Spring if their Senior year. Learn more about the course here.
All learning within the STEM Academy is guided by the EDP pictured to the left. This methodology for problem solving is based on the general process outlined by Engineering Universities everywhere!
The Steps:
ASK - What is the problem?
IMAGINE - Brainstorm solutions
PLAN - Prepare to implement a solution
CREATE - Prototype, test, and gather data
IMPROVE - Analyze results and look to better them
The process is presented cyclically, helping students to realize that the process of learning and developing understanding never ends!
