Fifth grade is a year of transition in which students learn skills that will lead them to academic success in middle school and beyond. Many changes such as having their own locker, receiving letter grades, and changing classes all help them become more independent and responsible for their own learning. Fifth grade is an exciting year of dynamic growth!
Talking Points will be our primary form of communication. Parents should be checking Talking Points if not daily, weekly.
It is the expectation that students show up to school on time daily, ready to learn, prepared with ALL materials as well as a charged chromebook. The FIRST thing students should do upon arrival is unpack and get their materials out and desk prepared for learning BEFORE moving into SEL time.
You will have reading, math, and science homework nightly. Homework is reviewed with your teacher daily/weekly. We try to make sure there is a healthy balance between school and time spent outside of the classroom, so if homework is ever beginning to become excessive for you please speak with your teacher. It should take no longer than 50 minutes.
Every week a newsletter is released. Parents AND students should review as it explains the assignments/tasks/assessments for that week.
Students will learn to be responsible for communicating with the teacher(s) when absent or having trouble completing assignments (late or missing work). Our goal is to work towards self-awareness and self-advocacy with assignments. Your parents can always reach out on your behalf, but we want you to learn to do this as well!
Homework:
**Math homework nightly- HW will begin week 2. Please be aware that HW spirals and there will be many concepts presented (5 questions). We will have the students CIRCLE the must do problems and the others are only an ATTEMPT to complete. We will review HW daily (first) and share how to solve the problems they’ve NOT been exposed to. By January, and we promise, students will be able to complete many of the problems independently and by the end of the year, there will be hardly any struggle. We have done this for several years and it’s proved effective and part of the reason our math scores are outstanding in fifth grade. We also notice much more confidence when problem solving and student leadership. Please email us with any questions.
**Reading homework nightly
**Science homework nightly- study your study guides/resources for the current unit of study.
