Here is what our leaders are learning this week:
The 7 Habits: Students will be reviewing their leadership notebooks
EL Module: Students will finish their "Most Important Things About School" books and begin sharing
EL Skills Block: Students will be taking a mid-module assessment in reading and spelling
Science/SS: Students will be learning about Hispanic Heritage month
Math: Students will be practicing skip counting by 5s, 10s and 100s

Quarter 1 Week 8
Here is what our leaders are learning this week:
The 7 Habits: Students will be learning about setting goals using the 4DX model
EL Module: Students will begin writing their 'Most Important Things About School' book based on their research school from 'Off to Class'
EL Skills Block: Students will learn our -oa vowel team and -ow that make the long o sound
Science/SS: Students will be learning about Hispanic Heritage month
Math: Students will be practicing place value with 3 digit numbers

Diving into Data night at the Lake is on Thursday, September 21. Please save the date and plan to attend to learn more about your child's literacy data and their Team Time class!

The 7 Habits: Students will be learning about setting goals using the 4DX model
EL Module: Students will be discussing the similarities and differences of our school and another school of their choice from 'Off to Class'
EL Skills Block: Students will learn our -ie and -igh vowel teams that make the long i sound
Science/SS: Students will be continuing learning about sound and culture as well as creating their Leadership Notebooks
Math: Students will be practicing adding and subtracting with and without regrouping

EL Skills Block: Students will learn our -ee and -y and -ea vowel teams that make the long e sound
Science/SS: Students will be continuing learning about sound and culture
Math: Students will be learning about various addition and subtraction strategies (specifically using base ten blocks and drawings) to solve two digit addition and subtraction equations

EL Module: Students will be exploring various schools in other countries and discussing the similarities and differences to Lake Myra.
EL Skills Block: Students will learn our -ay and -ai vowel teams that make the long a sound
Science/SS: Students will be continuing learning about sound and culture
Math: Students will be learning about various addition and subtraction strategies (specifically using base ten blocks and drawings) to solve two digit addition and subtraction equations

This week in your child's folder, you will be receiving information about their current EL Skills Block microphase in encoding (spelling) and decoding (reading), mClass reading benchmark information, and your child's Q1 interim. This data helps us form small groups as well as place your child in their team time class based on their specific phonics need.
Quarter 1 Week 4
Here is what our leaders are learning this week:
The 7 Habits: Students will be practicing recognizing their emotions
EL Module: Students will be finishing our Invisible Boy book study and discussing how Brian became visible throughout the end of the story
EL Skills Block: Students will begin reviewing the Magic e syllable type
Science/SS: Students will continue learning about sound in Science and culture in Social Studies
Math: Students will be using various strategies (number line, mental math) to solve addition and subtraction equations
REMINDERS
This week we will continue to work on our first cycle of spelling words. The words will be the same words you received in your child's folder last week. If you need another copy, please download it below.

Here is what our leaders are learning this week:
The 7 Habits: Students will be practicing recognizing their emotions
EL Module: Students will be discussing how characters feelings change throughout a story using our anchor text, The Invisible Boy, by Trudy Ludwig
EL Skills Block: Students will begin reviewing open and closed syllables
Science/SS: Students will be learning about sound in Science and will be exploring culture in Social Studies
Math: Students will be using various strategies (count on, count all, bar model) to solve addition and subtraction equations
REMINDERS
This week your child will receive their first week of spelling words and a spelling tic-tac-toe board. This will serve as our optional homework each week. Please keep track of your tic-tac-toe board or find it on the Homework tab above. See below for more information about phonics in 2nd grade!

Quarter 1 Week 2
Here is what our leaders are learning this week:
The 7 Habits: This week we will continue our 'First 8 Days' study where we learn about one of the 7 habits each day!
EL Module: Students will begin exploring our unit on Schools by identifying character feelings and how they change throughout our anchor text, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds.
EL Skills Block: Students will be assessed on their spelling and decoding skills for their beginning of the year benchmark.
Science/SS: This week we will discuss expectations for science and social studies and begin our sound unit in science.
Math: Students will be exploring the 'count on' addition strategy as well as using the bar model to solve equations.
REMINDERS
Your child's Monday folder will be sent home on Monday, August 7. Please be sure to look in your child's folder for important information and send it back on Tuesday. Thank you!

At Lake Myra, we encourage students to read daily. You will receive a calendar from the PTA where you can mark each day your child reads for 20 minutes or more. You may find these in your child's Monday folder or may download them here. Return this calendar to your child's teacher at the end of the month and your child will receive a free book from the PTA!

School Meals: Families must reapply for free or reduced meal benefits each school year. Click here to complete the application on line or a paper copy is available from the main office. Applications must be completed no later than 9/11/23.
Meal prices have changed for 23-24: Breakfast $1.50 Lunch $3.25. Sign up for a MySchoolBucks account to make paying for meals easy.
You can now register to volunteer from ANYWHERE (previously registration had to occur at a WCPSS facility). Follow this link to sign up as a WCPSS volunteer. Registration must be completed again EACH school year.

Welcome to the first week of second grade! We are so excited to begin!
Here is what our leaders are learning this week:
The 7 Habits: This week we will begin our 'First 8 Days' study where we learn about one of the 7 habits each day!
EL Module: Students will be practicing our first 'Leader Conversation Norm' of speaking in complete sentences when answering a question.
EL Skills Block: Students will be assessed on their spelling and decoding skills for their beginning of the year benchmark.
Science/SS: This week we will take this time to get to know each other and share our ME bags!
Math: Students will be learning about tools vs toys and exploring the various math tools we will use this year.
REMINDERS
Please be sure your child has a healthy snack and water bottle each day.
Your child's Monday folder can be sent back on the first day of school. Please be sure the information is filled out completely before sending it back in.
