International Baccalaureate Programmes at NMS and NHHS

International Baccalaureate programmes represent the gold standard of internationally-recognized, rigorous curriculum. To offer Washington County Public Schools students another opportunity for specialized education is to value our diverse populations’ interests and needs. The addition of International Baccalaureate to a campus elevates each school’s culture, as it fosters international-mindedness and the characteristics of the IB Learner Profile in all of its community members.

The IB MYP is a five year programme, which starts in the sixth grade (Year 1) at Northern Middle School and culminates in the tenth grade (Year 5) at North Hagerstown High School. In the MYP, all students are IB students and all teachers are IB teachers. Students and teachers explore concepts and global contexts through an inquiry based, student centered classroom environment. The IB Learner Profile, Approaches to Learning, and international mindedness are an integral part of the school community. The MYP prepares students for the DP and CP by reflecting the depth, breadth and balance that is characteristic of all IB programmes.

To prepare students for the 21st century, the International Baccalaureate has developed the IB Career-related Programme, an academic qualification designed to support schools and colleges that offer career-related course to their students.  The newest of the four IB programs, the IBCP is offered in over 225 schools worldwide. The addition of the IBCP to North Hagerstown High School provides students another path to support specific career-related interests, rather than the broadened spectrum of the IBDP.

The DP was established to provide students with a balanced education, facilitate geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding.  The DP organizes teaching and learning through six subject groups, underpinned by the DP core.  DP students apply to more than 3,300 higher education institutions each year, in close to 90 countries.  The most popular of these institutions are ranked among the top universities in the world.

Principals' Message

Mrs. Allshouse and Dr. Chilcutt discuss the importance of the North High - Northern Middle IB Partnership.

Explore the partnership's Academic Honesty Policy, Inclusion Policy, Assessment Policy, and Language Policy.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) learner profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success.  They imply a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them. These traits are shared by all IB teachers and students around the world.

Approaches to Learning

ATL are deliberate strategies, skills and attitudes that permeate the IB teaching and learning environment.  ATL supports the IB belief that a large influence on a student’s education is not only what you learn but also how you learn.
