MYP at NMS & NHHS

IB MYP AT NORTHERN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Northern Middle School was authorized as an IB World School in the fall of 2019. At Northern Middle, all students have access to the IB Middle Years Programme. In other words, every student is an IB student, every teacher is an IB teacher. The IB is more than a program in our building, it is who we are. Northern Middle is an incredibly diverse school community, which consists of students/teachers from 40 different countries. Additionally, there are 28 different languages spoken by members of our school community.

IB MYP Magnet Program

Magnet level courses in mathematics and ELA are offered at Northern Middle School. Students in the magnet program participate in an accelerated math course schedule. These students take 9th grade Algebra 1 in 7th grade, and 10th grade Geometry in 8th grade. The WCPS Office of Advanced Programs handles the application process and program placement.

Well Rounded Approach

Students take all 8 subjects, every year, while they are at Northern Middle. These subjects are Language and Literature (ELA), Individuals and Societies (SS), Sciences, Mathematics, Language Acquisition (Foreign Language), Design, Arts, and Health/PE.

Service as Action

A principle component of an IB education is service as action. At Northern Middle School, students have opportunities, both in school and outside of school, to contribute to their community through informed action.

Teaching and Learning at Northern Middle School

The subject-group overview provides evidence of vertical and horizontal planning, documenting the written curriculum in each subject group across all years of the programme. The overview includes the unit title, key and related concepts, global context, statement of inquiry, objectives, and ATL skills and content. (IBO 2021)

Inquiry, Action, REflection

MYP projects are student-centered and age-appropriate, and they enable students to engage in practical explorations through a cycle of inquiry, action and reflection.

Personal Project

The Personal Project is the culminating event of your years in the IB Middle Years Programme. This project reflects all the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills you have developed from your studies and a good understanding of the Global Contexts. It provides an excellent opportunity for you to produce a truly personal and creative work. The personal nature of the project is important, as it should be based around a topic, which motivates and inspires YOU!
