College Readiness

Advancement Via Individual Determination is an internationally-recognized system for students who possess a desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.  AVID Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help these students succeed on a path to college and career success.

In the AVID Elective course (grades 9-12) students develop skills and habits that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses.

AVID students:

• gain self-confidence, develop college readiness skills, participate in study (tutorial) groups, learn about financial aid, and apply for scholarships as they work to achieve their goals

• research colleges to find those that are a good fit for them—academically, socially, and financially

• are successful in honors and AP coursework

• build life-long friendships and develop strong support systems

• receive individualized college and career guidance as they select high school courses and apply to college

AVID is a 4-year high school elective course.  It is application-based and spaces are limited.  Students and parents interested in applying to AVID should contact the coordinator at their school (see above).

Upward Bound's mission is to assist low-income, and/or first-generation college bound high school students in the successful completion of secondary education by preparing them academically as well as socially for enrollment and completion of higher education. 

This is accomplished by providing participants with rigorous and nurturing academic courses; tutoring services; college-preparatory workshops; academic, college, and financial aid advising; career exploration; leadership opportunities; and cultural enrichment.

Upward Bound is a grant funded College Preparedness Program that is a collaboration between WCPS and HCC.
