Elementary School Programs

What is GATE?

GATE - (Gifted and Talented Education) programs are specialized education services that meet the needs of students who have advanced ability strengths in verbal, quantitative, or non-verbal thinking skills.

Multiple criteria are utilized during the universal screening and identification process, which include measures of ability, performance, and potential.   A typical GATE student has the ability to perform well above grade level on math and/or reading skills.

In accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations for Gifted and Talented Education, all students are screened for GATE services, and a distinct identification process is followed across the district.

GATE - Gifted and Talented Education

Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) services are available at all WCPS elementary schools.

GATE programs are designed to meet the specific academic and social emotional needs of each student who has been identified as GATE.

Measures of ability or aptitude, performance, and potential are utilized during the identification processes.

Units of instruction are concept-based and complement, but do not duplicate, the Maryland College & Career Readiness Standards.  Instruction includes specific creative and critical thinking training exercises, as well as shared inquiry, and STEM-based activities.
