When people refer to climate change they are talking about the long-term changes in the Earth's biomes and temperatures. Over the past hundred years, scientists have noticed an increase in the Earth's temperature and have linked it to greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions are mainly made up of carbon dioxide emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels, and also by deforestation and other land uses. The combustion of fossil fuels happens when humans use fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, petroleum, and oil (that are all made up of carbon) to fuel their vehicles, appliances, homes, factories, etc. And so human's large carbon footprint is what is causing climate change.
In the future, climate change may affect specific plants in my garden such as carrots, peas, kale, spinach, and a few other plants. This is because those plants grow in cooler temperatures and are not equipped for warmer weather. Another possible consequence of climate change is that the soil will become more dry and it will be much more difficult to keep all the plants consistently watered.
I've learned that we all can help to mitigate climate change by making small actions that have big impacts on our future like decreasing our carbon footprint. It is important to decrease our carbon footprint because carbon dioxide is what fuels greenhouse gases and therefore minimizing our input of carbon will help control global warming. Ways we can do this is by riding our bikes to places instead of using a car or other automotive vehicle; stop eating or lessen our intake of cow meat specifically but all meat in general; reduce energy consumption by insulating our homes, lowering our thermostat in the winter, rising it in the summer and turning off lights and other appliances when we aren't using or needing them. There are many more things you can do to help and I encourage you to look up other solutions on your own.
