The Health Careers course is designed to assist students interested in the medical field in determining an occupation that will best suit their capabilities and interests. The program uses a competency based curriculum that is fundamental to a variety of careers in the health care industry. “CORE” knowledge and skills are introduced the first semester to the students as a foundation in such areas as; Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Related Disorders, Professional Standards, Safety, Monitoring Body Functions, Disease Prevention, and Introduction to Health Careers.
Students will expand their skills and knowledge in specific areas of career interest. Career choices such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Optometry, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Records and Secretarial, Dental Careers, Medical Lab, Medical Assisting, Nursing, Nursing Assisting and others will be offered. Students may be placed in the community health care setting for on-the-job career experience any time after completion of the CORE segment. Emphasis on academics, professional development, leadership, and organizational skills are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Course Content Goals:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
● Identify basic levels of organization of the human body.
● Identify body planes, directional terms, cavities, and quadrants.
● Analyze basic structures and functions of human body systems (skeletal, muscular,integumentary, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, nervous, special senses, endocrine,digestive, urinary, and reproductive).
● Infection Control prevention
● Describe common diseases and disorders of each body system (such as: hypertension, cancer,
diabetes, dementia, stroke, heart disease, tuberculosis, hepatitis, COPD, kidney disease, arthritis,ulcers, auto immune disorders).
● Discuss research related to emerging diseases and disorders
● Demonstrate competency in basic math skills and mathematical conversions as they relate to
healthcare.
● Demonstrate use of the 24-hour clock/military time.
● Identify existing and potential hazards to clients, co-workers, and self. Employ safe work
practices and follow health and safety policies and procedures to prevent injury and
illness.
● Understand accepted ethical practices with respect to cultural, social, and ethnic
differences within the healthcare environment.
● Describe legal responsibilities, limitations, and implications on healthcare worker actions.
● Identify personal traits and attitudes desirable in a member of the career ready healthcare team.
● Research levels of education, credentialing requirements, and employment trends in health
professions.
● Distinguish differences among careers within health science pathways (diagnostic services,
therapeutic services, health informatics, support services, or biotechnology research and
development).
● Apply technical skills required for all career specialties and demonstrate skills and knowledge as appropriate.
● Utilize and understand information technology applications common across health professions.

All work is expected to be turned in by the assigned due date! Late work will be docked at the following schedule:
One day late 10% dock
Two days late 20% dock
Three days late- No assignments will be accepted and a 0 will be given
TEST RETAKE POLICY:
Anyone wishing to improve their grade on a test may place a request through google classroom, Retake Request Form located in Documents. A date and time of retake will be agreed upon by student and teacher once criteria have been met. The highest grade attained on any summative assessment, whether it is original or a retake will be entered into the gradebook with no additional penalties. All retakes from a unit must be complete prior to the completion of the subsequent unit. There will be NO retake opportunities available for Semester Final tests.
Absences: Make up work and Test Policy:
Students have a period of time equal to the length of the absence in which to turn in makeup
work or to have developed a plan with the teacher for making up the work. A student absent for a previous scheduled test must make up the test on the day that they return to class.
