The History Of The Fight Song / Alma Mater

Fight Song

The Woodhaven Fight song was written for WHS specifically. It is currently not known who wrote the fight song. Director Jim Mobley arrived in 1994 and noticed that there was no score, and that copies for the piece did not match key signature or rhythms instrument to instrument. In 1996-97, the parts were combined into a unified score and the notations and key errors were fixed. Parts were created for instruments that did not have parts. Prior to this, upperclassmen taught freshmen the song by their own written pieces.

The fight song was created on a early iMac, one that had a floppy drive. There is no "original" copy of the score from that time.

Alma Mater

The Alma Mater for WHS was originally a poem written by a student or staff member. The directors came together and picked a college Alma mater for the band to preform for the time being. WHS alumnus Matt Conaway, was asked to create music for the Alma mater. Working with his professor at the University of Indiana, Matt created the new Alma Mater, and we began performing it in 1999. The Woodhaven Marching Band sings the Alma Mater after every event and practice that is hosted. It signifies the understanding of "once a warrior, always a warrior" and the pride that comes along with the group.

- Andrew Talbott, Class of 2020

"During my four years of marching band, I met amazing people who have supported, listened, and changed me. They helped me build self-confidence and grow more as a person. These people made me realize that I've always been capable of doing great things. Marching band gave me the opportunity to do the craziest and stupidest things that I never thought I'd ever do. I didn't expect to get much from this program at first, and surely these four years delivered a valuable and welcoming experience that I can't ever forget."
