High School Social Studies

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Social Studies Department at the High School is dedicated to devoloping skilled, knowledgeable, and concerned citizens of our community, nation, and world. We hope to influence our students to appreciate the struggles of the past and work towards a better tomorrow. Our department continually strives to provide students with the knowledge, understanding, awareness, appreciation, sensitivity, and compassion regarding the human condition--past and present. Through this framework they can develop the skills of critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making that will enable them to meet creatively and intelligently the challenges of a changing world and become lifelong learners. Presently, our Senior High School curriculum is in the process of aligning to the new N.Y.S. Social Studies Framework

Departmental goals for all of our students:

• To have students read effectively, comprehend what they read, write clearly, engage in conversations with one another, listen to each other, be problem-solvers, ask questions and seek answers, respect the world in which they live and make others around them better.
• To promote knowledge of the core content of historical, political, economic, legal and social issues of our world, our nation, and our community.
• To help students see the world from different perspectives-those of the historian, the geographer, the economist, the political scientist, the psychologist, the lawyer and other social scientists-and employ the different tools and techniques of each discipline in critical thought.
• To guide students of our diverse student population in realizing their potential as citizens of a democratic nation and members of our local community.
