SUMMER INDEPENDENT READING PROJECT:
Read a book (minimum 175 pages for incoming grade 6 students).
Complete 8-10 post-its while reading the book. If you were a student at Duffy in June 2024, you may have been given a paper packet. If not, simply review the summer reading project materials posted at the wbps.org website:
Write, neatly, the book's title and the book's author at the top of a blank piece of paper and then attach your post-its to the paper for safe-keeping.
Students should label each post-it with any of the following topics (or add some of your own topics): theme, connections, symbolism, character traits, author's style, and important quotes. Then jot a few important ideas from the book on that topic onto each post-it. See some examples in the picture at the left.
(10 bank post-its may have been provided for students to use)?
Bring the paper containing your completed post-its (and the book, if possible, but it's not necessary) to school with you on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024. It will be collected the first day, in class.
You will be completing the 2nd part of the project (the one-pager 11"x17" poster) in ELA classes during the week following - a miniature version of this poster is pictured at the website. You may refer to the post-its while designing the poster, but you may also want to add additional information. Brief, informal oral presentations of the posters begin on Friday, 9/13/24.
The post-its and the one pager will each be assessed as project grades for marking period 1.
SCHOOLWIDE DAILY SUPPLIES for all core classes:
pencil pouch containing pencils, pens (red + blue or black), highlighters (2-3 colors), earbuds (if you don't want to use class set of headphones).
2-pocket homework folder (to share between classes or purchase a separate one for each class - your choice!)
SUPPLY LIST FOR LAL gr. 6-8:
3-5 packs of Post-Its sticky notes (3"X3" or larger). (These will be used nearly every day in class - store extras in your locker).
(1) 3 or 5 subject spiral notebook (it is recommended to purchase a higher quality notebook such as Staples or Mead Five Star!! This will be used every day in class).
1 or 2 marble composition books (standard size 7.5 x 9.75 inches - using one at a time, two will last you all year in ELA). (Store extra in your locker).
(1) pack of 3x5 notecards (100). (Store in your locker until needed).
Students:
You will be joining a Google Classroom for your class period. The code will be shared during the 1st week of class.
LIBRARY BOOKS: You will be checking out books for independent reading on your first day in LAL class. You need to always have a silent-reading book AND post-its with you in LAL. You will create post-its while reading , and then you will be asked to select 1-2 post-its per week and "write long" in your reading journal.
Look through the classroom guidelines posted below. We will be doing stations during week one that ask you questions about them...
Get ready for a great year in gr. 6!
