Developing a strong sense of self-awareness is a critical first step in engaging in constructive dialogue. This section comes first in the set of learning resources as it helps participants deepen their own self awareness and builds a foundation for engaging thoughtfully with oneself and others. The activities focus on understanding one’s own values, beliefs, and communication style, and then extend these practices toward thinking about others in preparation for meaningful dialogue. At the end of this section, participants will have a deeper awareness of their values and beliefs and a better understanding of how these developed.
Activities:
Goals:
To increase your self awareness about who you are and how you walk in the world.
If you are doing this in a group context, it will give others in the group a chance to get to know some of these parts of you.
Goal:
To develop your ability to ask questions of another person in order to learn about who they are and how they came to have the values that are important to them. To develop a better understanding of your own values by answering questions that are asked by your partner
Goal:
Self awareness is a key element necessary for engaging in dialogue across differences. This exercise is to help you identify some of the things that — at this point in your life — you think are or will be important to you.
Goal:
Values are what we deem important and worthy in life. They inform how we spend our time and energy. We often inherit them from our families of origin, and then add, swap, and/or modify our values based on education and experience as we age. This is a further opportunity to identify the qualities and experiences on which you place a high value as a way to help you prepare for engaging in difficult conversations with others who might hold different values.
Goal:
To explore more deeply the things on which you place high value and explore both how you came to hold this value and where in your life the importance of this value is evident.
Goals:
To reflect on the values you hold as important.
To practice asking questions of and listening to another person with different values and experiences.
Goal:
To explore how each of us communicates and interacts in groups.
Goal:
To provide a structured chance for self-reflection about key issues in the social and political landscape.
