In 2019, as a result of all that was happening in the United States and around the world through the Black Lives Matter movement, escalating consequences of climate change, COVID-19, and the elections, a group of students at Waynflete, an independent school in Portland, Maine, came together to start a new initiative on campus: the Perspective Project. Ever since our inaugural conversation with former Secretary of Defense and U.S. Senator William Cohen on September 22, 2019, we have hosted events every few weeks throughout the academic year as an opportunity to learn from and pose questions to leaders and experts in our community. See our Past Events page to learn about former guests. The Perspective Project aims to use conversation to learn from and celebrate the perspectives, expertise and lived experiences of our local and global community. The Perspective Project believes that exploring new perspectives and challenging our own better equips us to tackle big-picture and everyday issues with innovative and empathetic solutions. As of the 2023-2024 school year, our goal is to foster opportunities for members of the Waynflete community to hear from people in our local and global communities about their profession, passion project, achievements, or anything in between.
The Perspective Project is led by three seniors at Waynflete. Please see Project Leadership for more information.
Waynflete provides independent education from early childhood through grade 12. The school engages the imagination and intellect of students, guiding them toward self-governance and self-knowledge, and encouraging their responsible and caring participation in the world. Learn more at waynflete.org.
We host events to bring guest speakers to the greater Waynflete community. Our events have been formatted as "dinner conversations," webinar-style Q&A conversations hosted and moderated by student leaders. We hope to expand our programming to reach other aspects of the community.
We can be reached by email at perspective-project@waynflete.org. Please reach out with suggestions, questions, or comments about our programming. We would love for you to get involved.
