Class Expectations/Procedures

STUDENTS HAVE READ THIS AND SIGNED THIS DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL

Chemistry Mrs. Tonkin

Room 109

It is going to be a great year in chemistry! In order to have a fun but safe and productive class, there are a few simple rules to follow:

  1. Be in your seat at the bell.

  2. Be prepared for class every day with a writing utensil, covered book, charged ipad and a *stylus, and a 3 ring binder with paper ( also for Inorganic only - during mathematical chapters a TI-84 plus will be needed every day). *At the start of the year I will have a stylus available for you for $1 if needed.

  3. Be respectful of those in the classroom.

  4. Follow directions the first time they are given.

  5. Wait to be recognized before speaking. During lab time other appropriate rules will be given to follow.

A note about assignments: All homework assignments are due at the start of the next class period unless an extended time is given. Please check your Google Classroom daily. Turn your notifications on in all of your devices. Please make sure your name is at the top of your paper and that you turn it in to your inbox in our classroom upon entering class, or wait for me to collect it at the bell. Any papers received after that time are considered late and will receive a penalty. Please do not slide papers under the door or leave them on my desk. ** There will also be electronic classwork/homework,quizzes, or tests for chemistry done on a variety of appropriate websites and apps including but not limited to Google Classroom and Apple Classroom.** When submitting work on Google Classroom it is on time if it is turned in before class starts. On webassign there are also due dates and times within those assignments. Please DO NOT wait until you get in the room to submit something that is due.

Make up work: The school policy is that in-person students have a “day for a day” to turn in missed work if you are out sick. It is your responsibility to get your assignments on Google Classroom, complete them, and turn them in no later than the “day for a day”. If you are in school but miss class for a school related reason (sports,band,field trip, school play, student council or school related meeting etc…) you are responsible for getting your work and having it done on time with the class. If you come to school late for something excused and missed class, make sure your homework gets turned in that day. If you leave school early for something excused, make sure your homework is turned in that day before you leave. If you miss a lab, you will be given an alternate assignment that is due with the rest of the class. In person students, if you miss an assessment, plan to take it the next day.

A note about equipment: You will be using some equipment that will be new to you this year. From labware to iPads, this equipment is breakable. Please treat the equipment with utmost care. Please use only the equipment that is assigned to you. If something assigned to you is broken please notify me immediately so that you are not responsible for replacing it.

A note about dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is not acceptable. In the event that a student resorts to dishonesty the student will be given a zero for the assignment and appropriate contacts will be made. The following are among some of the forms of dishonesty:

Using books, notes or other materials during an examination (electronic or paper), unless expressly permitted;

Using purchased or free essays, papers or preparatory research for labs;

Copying others' work or engaging in unauthorized cooperation during an assignment or examination;

Allowing another student to copy from an examination or other assignment intended to be performed independently;

Borrowing from published works, whether material is taken verbatim or with minor alterations, without proper and/or sufficient acknowledgment;

Submitting as one’s own work originally done by someone else;

Misrepresenting statements concerning work submitted;

Falsifying or fabricating experimental data or results;

Falsifying or fabricating the need for extensions on papers or make-up examinations;

Using any/all search engines, apps, chats or the like for an assignment in which that is not permitted such as on quizzes, tests, and more;

If you have a doubt if it is the correct thing to do or not, please ask me first or just don’t do it.

(Just in case…)

Zoom/Remote Learning Expectations: If you are on LIVE or we go to remote instruction, find the meeting invitation under “materials” in your Google Classroom. Please do your best to join class in real time. Recordings of classes will be posted to your GC later that day in case you missed it. If you are on LIVE you must either join the class on schedule or view it the same day and complete any work assigned on time with your class. All work assigned is due the next day by the start of the class period just like it is if you are in person, unless otherwise specified. When you are live streaming remember you are in school, and all school rules are in effect. I will do my best to interact with you just like those that are in person. I plan to call on you to participate and you will have the opportunity to ask me questions. On zoom:

  1. Use your full name on your zoom and type it into the chat for attendance when class starts.

  2. Your video should be on most of the time to properly participate, however if it needs to be off for a bathroom break etc… that is understandable.

  3. You must adhere to all of the WHSD approved policies for example acceptable use, bullying policy, discipline policy, dress code etc... (Please, no inappropriate clothing or slogans on them, no pajamas, wear a shirt etc…)

  4. Be sure your background is appropriate for school. (Be cognizant of what is behind you and make sure it is not distracting or inappropriate please.)

  5. Your work is due in Google Classroom on time. No late work is allowed.

  6. Your assessments should be done in class with your class and submitted at that time. In case of absence, you will be allowed to join the “Make Up Assessment” zoom at 3pm the following day. No assessments will be allowed to be made up after that point.

Cell phones: Cell phones are not allowed in class. If I see or hear it, I have to take it as per our principals. If there is any question it is on during an assessment, this includes any earbuds in ears, watches or any other similar device during assessment of any kind, in addition to the school rules below, you will receive a 0 on your assignment.
