Community Connections

The Community Connections page is for students and parents! On this page you will find information from the community that students might wish to take part in. These can include: Wayne County Junior Leadership , the Mayor's Youth Council, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and others. Check back often as these offerings, applications and deadlines will vary throughout the year.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service.

Created in 1995 by Prudential and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the program honors middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state and national level.

Thus far, it has recognized more than 140,000 young people who’ve made a difference – and inspired countless others to consider how they might contribute to their communities.

The Goldsboro Mayor's Youth Council was established in October of 1972 to offer an organization through which youth implement programs and develop projects and special events that will benefit them and their community. The Youth Council offers programs of civic involvement, career and leadership, education, and fun. The council serves as a means for young people to practice democracy in order to better prepare themselves for later responsibilities as citizens and serve as a line of communication between the youth and the adults of the community. The council is also a chartered member of the State Youth Council. Membership consists 9th-12th graders from the following schools: Southern Wayne, Spring Creek, Charles B. Aycock, Wayne Country Day, Eastern Wayne, Rosewood, Wayne Early School, Goldsboro High, Wayne Christian and Wayne School of Engineering. The council meets every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from September to June of each year at City Hall from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., in the City Council Chambers. Teens have lots of fun in making a difference in their community!

Junior Leadership was a vision and class project of the Leadership Wayne Class of 1998-1999. It began with the goal of exposing high school juniors to the many job opportunities in Wayne County and has evolved over the years to include team building and leadership skills exercises.

Since its inception, over 320 students have graduated from this program.

Annually, the Chamber seeks high school juniors to apply for the Junior Leadership Program. This highly competitive process selects 25 high school juniors to participate in a number of projects throughout the year.

Junior Leadership meets for seven sessions from October through May. Participation in all events along with the completion of 10 hours of volunteer service hours is required. The graduation ceremony is held in May. Applications are posted at the beginning of the school year.
