Leadership - Job Interview - 2023-2024

Purpose: to evaluate contestants' understanding of employment procedures they will face in applying for positions in the occupational areas for which they are training.
Eligibility: Open to active SkillsUSA members.
Observation Rule: No observers will be allowed for this contest.
Clothing Requirements:
Students should dress professionally.
Button-up, collared, white dress shirt, white shirt, or white turtleneck.
Black dress slacks or black dress skirt (knee length at minimum); black closed-toed dress shoes.
Students should NOT have holes in their clothing or inappropriate language on t shirts or sweatshirts.
Students should NOT have any logo or identifying writing on any apparel worn during the competition.
Students can wear SkillsUSA clothing, but it is not required.
Wearing socks or hose is not longer required. If worn, socks must be black dress socks and hose must be either black or skin-tone and seamless/nonpattern.
Prohibited Devices:
Cell phones or other electronic devices (electronic watches) not approved by a competition's national technical committee are NOT allowed in the competition area.
Penalties for Prohibited Devices
If a competitor's electronic device makes noise or if the competitor is seen using it at any time during the competition, there could be a penalty or the competitor's scores may be canceled.

Knowledge Performance:
There is no written knowledge test required for this contest at regional or national levels of competition.
Contest Guidelines:
This contest will consist of FOUR parts:

You will present three copies to the judge/s.
Save your Resume as a PDF file type using file name format of "Last Name_First Name." For example, "Amanda Smith" would save her resume as Smith_Amanda.
Email your student's resume to the following email address NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, January 30, 2024 at 11:59 pm.
The resume must be saved as a PDF (see above).

Completion of application and communication skills with judge.
Contest starts when approaching the receptionist.
Contestants will complete an application in ink.
Contestants will have no more than 30 minutes, but may NOT have less than 15 minutes.
One point will be deducted for each minute or fraction thereof over the allotted time limit (maximum deduction of 10 points).
Information that should be included is listed below:
List name, address and phone number.
State a specific career objective.
Educational and training information.
Former employers and work experience, including transferable skills gained in a bulleted format.
Employment desired
Professional memberships, major accomplishments, and listing specific responsibilities
References should be on a separate page, not on the one-page resume
3. Interview process with one or more judges.
Each interviewer will receive a copy of the resume.
The interview will be approximately ten (10) minutes. At the state or national competition, the student competitor may have a longer interview (up to 30 min.).
There may time for four to six questions.
All contestants will be asked identical questions.
Example questions may include the following:
What is your objective?
What can you tell us about your future?
What are your strengths?
What are your qualifications?

4. Portfolio (Introduced at 2023 SkillsUSA Championships as a non-scored component of the competition; will be added to the scorecard for the 2024 SkillsUSA Championship)
A hard-copy collection of a contestant's abilities and accomplishments. The purpose of the portfolio is to provide another means for the interviewers to learn about the contestant (potential employee). The portfolio should be created as a final product to be used in applying for future employment.

Career Technical skills
Resume and Career Objectives: Prepare a current resume. The student should include a written statement, describing his or her career objective and plans to achieve that objective and competencies that have been mastered. All competitors must also submit a hard copy of the resume to the technical committee chair.
References: Letters of reference from teachers, mentors, supervisors, employers or others who can verify the student's skill ability (limit of three references).
Awards and Recognition: Include copies of certificates, documentation of leadership activities, news articles and supporting material to serve as proof of the student's achievements. Reflect the highest level of achievement.
Work Sample Documentation: Summary of work site experiences pertaining to chosen occupations. Students should distinguish project documentation that is a result of school-based learning versus work-based learning. Work experience can be supported with photographs as appropriate.
Community Service: List of activities conducted that provided a benefit to the community. This section should demonstrate excellence and professionalism in the area of community service.
Membership and Affiliations: List of organizations and community groups in which the student is actively involved.
Other: Any other items that reflect the student's abilities and accomplishments (newspaper articles, clippings from other media, acknowledgements, etc.)

Contestants are NOT required to provide personal information in this document, but MUST follow grammar and conventions used in typing the information.

This is just a SAMPLE RESUME. Students may use another format. - Tech Chair stated that there is no template or required format except that the resume should appear in an organized manner or fashion.
