Institutional Application
Some schools will only use their institutional application.
Others will offer the institutional application as well as the Common Application. They do not favor one over the other so pick the one that best fits your needs.
If you do not have any other Common Application schools you’re applying to and a school offers an institutional application, it might be best to use the institutional application as they are usually shorter. Consult your counselor for the best strategy.
Express/Exclusive Institutional Applications
Offered to some students who are in the school’s database.
May waive an application fee or essay.
It is definitely a good strategy to use this application type to eliminate the cost and/or extra work.
Not all schools do this so watch your email and mail this fall for opportunities.
Nearly 900 schools accept the Common Application.
Fill out the Common App once and send it to multiple schools.
Select one essay prompt to send to multiple schools
Many schools will have supplemental information specific to their school and some will have additional essays.
Common App simplifies the process and is fairly easy to use.
One application fee to apply to multiple HBCUs.
There are 55 member institutions.
Has been in existence for 20 years!
This application is not widely used by BDHS students since the Common App or institutional application covers the majority of applications for students.
Most students do not want to fill out both the Common App and the Coalition App as it is time-consuming.
The main reason a student would use the Coalition Application is if the school were Coalition exclusive and only use that portal to accept applications (you don’t even need all five fingers on your hand to list them
