Astronomy Grading
Each Quarter’s grade will be based on an accumulation of points:
HOMEWORK POINTS:
For college credit students:
Individual Homework grades will be recorded but not averaged. Instead, every two or three weeks we will have a quiz and at that time a homework grade will be assigned along the following criteria:
-Every student will receive a 20 to 40 point allotment of points (based on the amount of homework in that grading period)
- For each unsubmitted homework , three points will be subtracted.
- For each homework that is less than 60 % correct, one point will be subtracted.
- Late homework can be made up for one additional point
For honors credit students:
- All homework must be completed on time and all points will be cumulative
-honors credit students must complete the regular assignments plus additional assignments independently
QUIZ POINTS:
Every two to three weeks (at the end of each unit) a quiz will be taken that is based on the homework assignments, activities, and lectures in class. Each will be worth 30 to 50 points.
PROJECTS:
Each quarter there will be an independent project
Q1: Phases of the Moon
Q2: Star gazing / Adopt a Constellation
Q3: Crowd sourcing / Citizen Science
Q4: Independent Research & Presentation
These projects will be worth 50-80 points
TESTS:
In lieu of midyear or final exams, in the last week of each quarter, a major assessment with be given on the content covered during that quarter. Approx. 100 points.
college credit students may use one side of one sheet (8.5" by 11") of hand written notes during the test
honors credit students will take the same test without notes. honors credit student will also have a few extra questions reflecting the extra honors HW content for that quarter
A typical quarter might have the following points:
Homeworks: 30 + 30 + 20 = 80 points
Quizzes: 40 + 40 +30 = 110 points
Project: = 50 points
Test: =100 points
Final grade = (points earned) / (340 points possible)
