Esperanza Rising...
The play starts at Esperanza's home on her birthday, and moves through the Mexican-American border, and finally to a migrant workers camp In Arvin, Californa. Set in 1930 during the Great Depression, we meet many people on the move during turbulent times. Mexicans are leaving Mexico in pursuit of a better life, and Americans are leaving the mid-west after the Dust Bowl, and many more people are out of work and trying to survive.
When choosing a play to explore with students, I ask myself:1. Does the play have a protagonist that students can identify with and does that protagonist embark on a journey in which they overcome obstacles and grow as a character? Will students grow by being part of this experience?2. Is the play relevant for our students, community and world in the present day? Will it entertain, educate, and enlighten our audience?
I would answer that Esperanza will take us a life-changing journey, one that many are going through in our present day. I look forward to digging into this work with the students, learning about their stories, and bringing this story to the community.
