Spelling and Phonics: Third graders will continue with instruction in the Fundations program, continuing from where they left off in second grade.
Reading: Third graders will participate in Reader's Workshop beginning with a focus lesson, and then moving to Independent Reading, literacy jobs, and Guided Reading. In this balanced literacy approach, students will improve skills in decoding, comprehension, talking about books, and how to choose "just right" books. For effective reading, students need to integrate the three decoding cues: syntax, meaning and visual. Third grade units of study in reading are:
Creating a Community of Learners
Monitoring for Meaning
Making Connections
Asking Questions
Inferring
Determining Importance
Summarizing
Synthesizing
Writing: We are happy to have adopted the Empowering Writers curriculum! Third graders will compose Opinion Pieces, Narrative Stories, and Informational Text. Grammar and mechanics will be integrated within the lessons. Children will make connections between books read and books written; choose topics and develop them using strategies authors use to make their writing organized and interesting; and share their writing with an audience.
