"I have been finding more and more that the range of artistic and linguistic analysis we undertook during my years in your class have had very far-reaching and positive effects on the quality of my work in college. Though I understood the personal benefits of such methods of thinking, I had not expected these skills to be so immensely useful within unrelated writing fields as well. This has come particularly handy this finals season, in which I have had to do lots of rhetorical and poetic analysis for my classes on Utopian literature and Modern Latin American studies." -Numerius, Class of 2023
"I'm currently in a history class about historical scientific western thought and I've come to realize how many times I use my Latin and Other Important Things knowledge." -Augusta Dictatrix, Class of 2021
"I love Latin and wanted to continue because in Latin class I didn't feel different. Everyone was like me. I didn't feel left out and I wasn't afraid to be me. Latin will always be the best class I've ever taken truly, it was fun, and it put a smile on my face. I got to go to an overnight Latin Convention in Madison with all my friends and miss a day of school, I hadn't been on a real field trip scene since I was in 5th grade, and it was the best one I've ever been on. Kolpin, I genuinely think that you are one of the best teachers I've ever had. You value all of your Latin students and make sure every one of us is okay, you check in on us and you listen to us and ask us about our interests. You listened to me about every silly thing I said about horses or Roblox, and you pushed us to not only be the best Latin students but also the best students." -Caecilia, Class of 2026
"This fall I started at UW Eau Claire studying Environmental Geography and Art, and in both of these disciplines I have frequently been reminded of things I learned and thought about in your class. I'm currently in a class where we've spent the past month just defining what geography is, which has included a history of the subject that directly relates to classical thoughts and has also functioned as a window into thoughts during other time periods as well. Last spring I studied art during the Renaissance period, which obviously also included a lot of reflection on classical ideas. All of these ideas feel so familiar from having been in your class, but I often struggle to recall the specifics.
Additionally, I frequently find myself wishing that I had paid more attention and worked harder to understand the things you taught in your class.Â
Thank you for teaching important things." -Aquila, Class of 2021
