Salve.
My name is Nate Kolpin. My official Latin name is Bubo Apiarius.
I started teaching Latin in 2014. Before that I studied Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek), Classical Humanities, and Latin Education at UW-Madison, graduating in 2013. Before that I graduated from Wauwatosa East High School in 2010 having taken Latin all four years.
I am the Sponsor of the Wauwatosa East and West chapters of the Wisconsin Junior Classical League. I advise Philosophy Club. In the past, I have co-advised the currently inactive Linguistics Club.
I believe that ideas are the most important, and therefore I want to discover the best ones and operate by them unerringly. I want to live the best life. Philosophy, linguistics, and economics are three fields that are of particular importance to me. I consider them necessary subjects of study for all human beings who wish to live a good life. Philosophy teaches humans which ideas are good and which are bad. It teaches humans what to evaluate. Linguistics teaches humans how to communicate clearly and powerfully and precisely. It illustrates the different ways a human can express ideas. Economics also helps humans make decisions, like philosophy, but also the effects of their actions and how to think about big- and small-picture interactions. Trade is the way humans create wealth both material and spiritual.
Hobbies and Interests besides Teaching Latin:
Beekeeping (I typically harvest over 100 lbs of honey each Summer!)
Video Games (Bioshock is my favorite narrative experience rivaled by Outer Wilds. The Total War series is my most-played.)
Pen and Paper Role-playing games (D&D is the most popular, but not the best TTRPG out there. Let's talk.)
Table-top games including Magic: The Gathering (EDH/Commander is my preferred format) and Chess.
Podcasts (Ask me for recommendations and tell me yours)
TV and Movies (I like talking about shows and movies)
Literature (I find it hard to sit and read from a book, but I am an intermediate "reader" in the form of audiobooks. My favorite novels so far are Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand and Moby Dick, by Herman Melville)
I have two cats, Eggs and Fish. Like all animals, they are unintelligent.
vale.
I acquired a human female baby in October 2022. I named her Coraline. Below are my Paternity Journal Entries from my Paternity Leave during Spring semester of 2023:

Below is a guide to an introduction to my favorite type of music:
Left: A rare and blurry photo of me in Latin class, circa 2009 or 2010. Right: That's me in the yellow shirt. Notice the Latin. Also notice, evidence that I did, in fact, have a friend or two in high school.
An illustrated story I created for a friend's birthday. I already gave it away before I could scan in the library.
