It would be nice to think that with Spring arriving and hopefully some improved weather, that attendance will start to rise over the coming weeks and months. We are still a little way off our ambition of reaching 97% but hopefully we can push closer to it as we finish the year.
It is the time of the year when we start thinking about summer holidays. Please be aware that we are unable to authorise any term-time holidays and if they last longer than 5 days, a fixed penalty notice is applied. We can only authorise an absence where there are exceptional circumstances that mean the timing of the absence is not within your control, e.g. a wedding.

I am sorry to say that Mrs Jandu has taken the difficult decison to retire immediately from the school. It was a difficult decision because she really wanted to complete the year with Hedgehogs but complications with her health meant that it wasn't feasible. It brings to an end a career of over 26 years at Watling and we all want to thank her for her loyal service. I know that we will all wish her the best for the future. She will come and say goodbye to the children before the end of the term.
We are very excited to take part in our first SET Music Concert at The Grove Theatre on Wednesday 11th March. It is an event that brings together all of the trust schools to perform vocal and instrumental pieces. The quality is always very high and I know that our choir, led by Mrs McLean, will be just as amazing.
On the last Thursday of term, Year 3 and 4 will be visiting the Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham where they will be able to put their scientific minds to the test and take part in some fun, educational exhibits. I am sure the children will have a lot of fun and learn lots.
After the Easter break, we will be changing our catering company for our school meals from Hobbs Catering to Innovate. The most important thing is that Lauren, our excellent cook, is staying and will still be preparing our delicious meals everyday.
The method of ordering meals will be changing and moving to an app based system. You will be given access to the app and will then be able to choose the meals that your child has on each day. This gives you much better control over what they choose and you will have the full allergen information available.
The price of meals will also decrease to £2.61. The saving is not made by a reduction in quality but has been achieved because we were part of a wider trust contract of 7 schools.
The new company will also be giving the dining area a refresh so I am sure the children will be excited to tell you all about it after that first day.
We will be in touch nearer the end of term to provide login details for the app and any other information that you will need.
Thank you to all of the parents who completed our recent survey. Your number added to the children and staff who completed their surveys means that we have helped to plant 194 trees. Along with the other schools in the Trust, we planted a grand total of 8172 trees.
On Monday we marked International Women's Day with each class learning about an amazing woman from history or a modern day heroine. Over the month, we will also be finding out more about the achievements of women through history, the barriers that they had to overcome and in many cases, the discrimination they faced in gaining recognition.
On Wednesday 25th March, we will be learning all about the Jewish religious festival of Passover which is marked in April. We have some visitors who are going to explain the origin of the festival and the story of Moses freeing the Jews from slavery.
The Early Years classes will also be celebrating the festival with their own arts, crafts and food tasting activities.
Thank you to all of the volunteers of the Friends of Watling who helped make the school's sponsored pancake flip go so smoothly. I hope the children enjoyed themselves and are proud to have helped raise money for the school.
Of course a massive thank you go to all of the families and friends who kindly sponsored the children, it is much appreciated.
The children returned after the half term break very excited to see that the Friends of Watling have very kindly invested in lots of new playtime equipment. We now have 4 basketball nets, plus a 5th one for the younger children. And a host of skipping equipment: skipping ropes, ankle skips, something called twirl sticks and even pogo balls.
Thank you to the Friends of Watling and to everyone who has supported their fundraising efforts that mean we can provide more active playtimes for the children.
A few reminders of some school rules:
