Ice, Snow, and Gold: WHere champions are made
This is the story about how the Winter Olympics came to be and how since its debut in 1924 World Records have been broken, lives have been changed, and the unity it brings to all people around the world.
The Olympics have been around for thousands of years starting in ancient Greece in the year 776 B.C. The first sport being a foot race that later evolved into various sports including the long jump, javelin throw, running, wrestling, boxing, and equestrian sports. These sports were the first sports competed in the Olympics. The first modern Olympics were held in Athens Greece in 1896 on April 5th through 15 lasting only ten days. This was the start of what would soon become the biggest sporting event in the world.
There are two types of Olympics - the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. The Summer Olympics consist of sports usually played in the warmer months such as swimming, soccer, and track and field. While the Winter Olympics consist of sports played in the colder months such as snowboarding, skiing, and ice skating. This year the winter Olympics are going to be held in Milan, Italy. The reason Milan was chosen to hold the Winter Olympics was cost efficiency, sustainability, and the long tradition of having the Winter Olympics held in Italy. The Olympics are not only influencing sports, it's influencing culture.
