Grade 2

Grade 2 Music at JTPS uses Conversational Solfege, which is the music literacy program developed by Dr. John Feierabend. Conversational Solfege is based on the belief that developing music literacy should follow much the same process we follow when we naturally develop our own speaking, reading and writing skills. In learning one’s own language, language skills are developed by ear before the reading and/or writing of language is introduced. This natural process enables one to instinctively communicate verbally with words and later, after learning to read, to learn to write those thoughts. In Conversational Solfege, “conversational” skills with rhythm syllables and solfege syllables are developed prior to the introduction of reading and writing music.

Students in Grade 2 also study the instruments of the symphony orchestra, folk dancing (modified, of course, in 2021-2022), and play pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments (modified in 2021-2022). Click the slide below to explore the instruments of the symphony orchestra.
