This map of Watertown dates back to 1853. It is the earliest map of the town and one of the most valuable Watertown relics anywhere. It has been extraordinarily useful as a research tool.

The map shows all the roads, buildings and bodies of water in town. Each home is labeled with the owner’s name. All the factories and stores are labeled with their associated names. The map also shows the town divided into school districts and the locations of all the little district schools. Back then, each district was responsible for the operation of its own one or two room schoolhouse. Around the border are illustrations of various factories, stores and homes as they appeared in 1853.

The Watertown Historical Society had a huge original version of this map on heavy fabric which was designed to hang on a wall.
