How is the ENL program instructed?
At present, the ESL program at Watertown High School are push in and pull-out. This means that your child is scheduled to see the ENL teacher at some point throughout the day. The ENL teacher generally co-teaches with the ENL student's English teacher durning their scheduled English class. Your child will NOT miss content-based or core classes. Depending on your child's English Language level, they may be scheduled to see the ENL teacher 1,2, or 3 periods a day.
What do you do in ENL?
In accordance with mainstream curriculum and New York State ENL learning standards, lessons are desgined to enrich listening, speaking, writing and reading skills, along with support in core classes.
Why is my child in ENL if he/she can speak English?
ENL is not only for non-English speakers. I am here to further enrich your child's English (reading, writing and listening), as well as their content vocabulary.
How long does a student stay in ENL?
A student is exited from the ENL when he/she has reached Proficient in all areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking) on the NYSESLAT test that is given in May every year.
Can a parent refuse ENL services for their child?
NO, NYS requires that all indentified ELL's (English Language Learners) receive ENL instruction and you DO NOT have the option to withdraw your child from an ENL program.
