About ENL

ENL is a program that is used throughout New York State to further develop and/or teach English to students whose families are familiar with a language other than English. This does not always mean that the student can speak, read, write or understand another language, but that another language is present in their home. We are an enrichment program, NOT a remediation program. Our goal is to further enrich your children with the English language within the New York State ENL learning stardards and the Common Core Curriculum.

The parents of all new students to a district must complete a Home Language Questionnaire as part of the registration process. (HLQ's in various languages are available on the NYSED website, www.NYSED.gov) Students who come from a home where a language other than English is present are screened with the NYSITELL test.

Once entered into the program the students are serviced with a push-in in their English class and could have an additional 1-2 classes in the ENL classroom as a pull-out. All ENL students are tested with the New York State English as a Second Langauge Assessment Test (NYSESLAT) in May each year. This test determines the students ENL placement for the following year along with their language proficiency level.

If a student tests at the Proficient level in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking, they will be exited from the program and will have an additional 2 years of ENL services.
