CoLAB Club
CoLAB Club is a new club for the 2023 - 2024 school year. We are an after school club where students do science! We meet once a month for three hours, where students network with local biotech professionals over dinner and get the chance to do research-based scientific experiments. Check the calendar and agenda below to see what we're doing at our next meetings and what activities we've done at past events!
We meet in 106A (Ms. Mundy's room)
Our next meeting is at 3:30 on January 25
At this meeting, we will learn about Dog Genetics with DNA electrophoresis.

By knowing who will attend, we are able to provide enough food and lab materials for each student.
At our first meeting, we learned about the tenets of scientific investigation. Scientists and students combined vinegar and baking soda in varying ratios in order to produce carbon dioxide, and used the produced carbon dioxide to determine the ideal ratio between our two reactants.
At our second meeting, students practiced the basics of DNA extraction with different types of fruit. Students, with the aid of scientists, extracted the DNA from bananas, strawberries, oranges, and grapes. After that, they looked at the DNA under a microscope--and discussed what worked best and why!
At our third meetings, students performed a task that many of our scientists do every day: gel electrophoresis. In this activity, students examined PCR-amplified KIT genes from six cats in order to determine which allele--long or short--was responsible for white-spotting in the cats.
Summer Opportunities
CoLAB keeps a running list of local summer internships. These can be paid, unpaid, or tuition-based programs. All programs currently listed on this website have early deadlines for students. If you need help applying, reach out to Ms. Kraemer, Ms. Mundy, Merle Kummer, or one of our mentors.
