Reading

This year for reading, each student will be in two reading groups.

During our Reading Intervention time in the morning, students will be doing 6 Minute Solutions to work on fluency and accuracy while reading allowed, as well as being part of a Book Club where they will be given different nonfiction texts to read and discuss with their group. These books are short, and the students will be given a new one every 1-2 weeks to read and discuss with their Book Club.

In the afternoon, the students will be reading Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, or Fantasy books (depending on the time of the year) with me and a small group. Each day the students are given a task to complete with the book independently, and then they are to bring that task to group the next day to discuss. We will have discussions about the reading each day (led by the students in the group), and I will facilitate the discussion, when needed, to rotate around the task they were asked to complete.

This will ensure that each student is reading a nonfiction text on a regular basis, as well as reading a book for more leisure and doing authentic tasks while reading to remember the reading and gain comprehension. This will better prepare each student for Middle School, when they are given multiple reading assignments at once.
