Here at Waterford, we try to provide as many outside opportunities for students to get involved in.
These are just a few events/opportunities past students have participated in and found to be extremely beneficial.
Every year UW-Eau Claire hosts a weekend long festival full of singing! Friday night is A Cappella Extravaganza where students can see the University's seven a cappella ensembles. Saturday is a full day of rehearsals where they will have the opportunity to work with the University Choral and Voice Directors, listen to 3 of the 5 University Choral Ensembles, and perform in the evening with many other High School Students from all over the Midwest. This is a great opportunity for students who may be looking to pursue music, are looking into different college programs in the state, or may be considering UWEC for their future.
Held at Carroll University
Middle and High School Students from all across Southeastern Wisconsin sing the same songs at the same exact time as students in other parts of the state for this phenomenal opportunity. It is the perfect place for those students who just love to sing, regardless of ability. There are 3 choirs that you can be involved in: Women's Choir (9th grade girls), Men's Choir (7-9th grade boys), or the Mixed Choir (9-12th grade boys/girls) You get to work with fantastic choral directors and clinicians, and have the opportunity to come back to class and share what you learned with everyone else involved in the HHS Choir program. We have had so many students come back from this opportunity and be better leaders because they are able to share what they learned with others.
**Please note** This is not a school field trip so parents/students will have to drive back and forth. We have had much success in the past with parents/students carpooling together.
Started in 1967, the Wisconsin School Music Association State Honors Music Project provides musically talented students with an opportunity to rehearse and perform with the nation’s finest conductors in a professional, highly disciplined setting. Selected through a rigorous audition process, students are challenged to perform at their musical best throughout the short rehearsal period, which culminates with a performance in October at the Wisconsin State Music Conference held in Madison each year. For many of these young musicians, the WSMA State Honors Music Project offers the experience of a lifetime, creating friendships, memories and skills they take with them in whatever path they choose.
Registration to audition is due at the end of November, and auditions are held in February.

Creativity is imperative in 21st century learning and what’s needed to prepare our youth for today’s workforce, regardless of the path they choose. The WSMA Student Composition Project is a program at the heart of creativity, encouraging young musicians to artistically take what they are learning in music education and apply it in their own way through original music compositions. Included in both the Wisconsin and National Standards for Arts Education, composition is a natural extension of the creativity mode of music. So what does all this mean to our young musicians?… An opportunity to spread their wings and explore their creative side by composing music through a program that recognizes and supports their efforts — the WSMA Student Composition Project!
Students submit original compositions and recordings to WSMA in the fall. These works are evaluated by Wisconsin composers and students receive written critique forms from the evaluators. Awards are given based solely on merit. All participants will be invited to attend the awards ceremony where the division winners compositions will be presented.

Do you want to dive deeper and find a stronger connection to making music? Previous NextDirection participants are now industry leaders. In Wisconsin alone, many of the WCDA leadership team’s first experiences in music education were through NextDirection.
Teaming with WCDA master teachers, NextDirection offers you the unique opportunity to work side-by-side with some of the most dynamic choral music educators and directors in the country. This year's guest director-teacher is Dr. Anthony Trecek-King.
