Tiered Interventions & Supports

Academic Interventions (SRBI)

WHS offers several academic interventions for students in need of support in Literacy, Mathematics, or other content related areas. Placement in these courses is based on student need through the WHS Care Team. The Care Team consists of school counselors, behavioral/mental health support staff, core content area teacher representation, and administration. Students will be referred to the Care Team by their teacher and/or school counselor. Parents who have concerns about their child's progress should speak to the appropriate teacher or school counselor to discuss if a referral to the Care Team is appropriate.

The following intervention courses are available at WHS and earn 0.5 credits per semester.

  • Algebra Link- Students in need of additional time and support in math may be recommended to take Algebra Link concurrently with the required Algebra 1-A course. Students with MAP scores below 228 will be considered for Algebra Link, along with data and input from either Grade 8 Math Teacher or Pre-Algebra Teacher.

  • Math Connect- This course is a Math support class for any student in need taking a course other than Algebra 1. This is a scheduled course for those students who need consistent support and the reteaching of skills and concepts. Students will be recommended for Math Connect based on MAP, PSAT, or classroom grades/data.

  • English Link- This course is a specific support for Grade 9 English students and runs concurrently with Algebra Link. Students who need both supports will share a class-block in their schedule. Placement is based on teacher recommendation, MAP Scores below the 40th Percentile, and classroom performance.

  • English Connect- This course is available for students in grades 10-12 who need support with literacy skills (both reading and writing) as they are applied in all content areas. Students are recommended based on MAP, PSAT or classroom grades/data.

  • Academic Study Hall- This course is a structured and supported study hall. Students recommended for this course will receive support in the organization of their high school workload- what homework or classwork needs to be completed and developing timelines and other strategies around work completion. Generally, students in this course will have the content understanding and skills to complete the work independently once they are organized and have a plan.

Special Education

The Waterford High School Special Education Program supports students identified through the Planning and Placement Team process as having a disability defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). The Special Education Program assists students in accessing the general education curriculum while supporting each student’s individual needs as identified in the student’s Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.). Students receiving special education services are determined to be eligible for services until exit criteria is met or as determined by the P.P.T. process. The Special Education Program at Waterford High School assists students in acknowledging their unique individual abilities and learning needs while encouraging each student to become independent life-long learners, as well as, assisting each student’s transition from Waterford High School to post-secondary and/or career opportunities.
