The teachers at Watauga have a significant impact on the artistic community. Because of their position in shaping young artists, their view on digital and traditional art is important because it gives the student body an idea of how far they can experiment with artistic boundaries. The Spark asked two of our art teachers questions regarding the art education system. Below, are their thoughts and personal opinions on the subject.
Dacia Trethewey has been teaching in the Watauga County School System for 20 years, 10 in k-8, and 10 at Watauga High. To Ms. Trethewey, art is about expression and comfort. "It's a way you can express yourself and ideas. Anything ranging from joy, coping mechanisms, to expressing what you feel and think." And as many art educators have experienced, Ms. Trethewey says that life has always been a part of life. "It's only natural for me to want to create because art has always been a part of me and a part of my life."
Alyssia Ruggiero has been teaching art for 26 years, and she has been teaching at Watauga for 6 years. To her, art is everywhere. "I consider and think about everything in a visual form, even in the outside world I picture how I would create something." Ruggiero believes that art is an expression that is unique to your individual self, "just like words, except a visual representation, even when you're tracing something, there's that part of you represented in that work."
