Lucy Walker has been a part of Playmaker since the pandemic, and she has overcome a lot to be such a strong member of the ensemble. In "Our Place" she gives a profound performance as a woman with great aspirations who is trying to figure out who she wants to be in life.
What were you looking to accomplish coming into Playmakers?
Coming into playmakers, I wanted us to be a connected ensemble. Last year, our ensemble wasn’t as connected as one and in some ways that kinda made it challenging to strive. This year, because all of them were new to NCTC and competing, I knew it might be hard to transition.I always wanted to keep the tradition alive of going to States. We have gone every year since 2018 and I didn’t want us to not achieve that goal. I never would have thought at the beginning of the year we would be State Champions.
Over the years how have your experiences in Playmakers challenged, inspired, or shaped you as an artist and person?
Playmakers has given me a lot of my “firsts” in theater. Last year it was my first time having a speaking role in a play in high school. Covid took away a lot of my underclassman experiences in the aspect of performing. It has challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and perform in front of many different audiences and people around southeastern part of the country. Being able to perform on the Kentucky Opera house stage as a senior is something i will never forget. The bonds and friendships I have made will stay with me forever and the lessons I have learned that have shaped me not just as a actor but a person has been so influential.
Do you have any advice for incoming playmakers?
Enjoy it. It’s so much fun and you learn so much along the way.
How would you describe Playmakers as a community?
Because of us being together for a full year and going on multiple trips together we are very close with each other. We are all in the same boat when it comes to acting and leadership skills. It’s not really a community its more of a family.
Reflecting back on your time in the program, are you satisfied with your achievements as an individual and group?
I am really proud of my ensemble this year. Although only THREE of us have ever competed before, everyone easily knew what to do. They were great throughout the whole process, even when it can get stressful.
