For the students at Watauga High School, the Parkway means everything. In a small town, The Blue Ridge Parkway offers many recreational ways for students to get outdoors.

Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only transformed from one form to the other.
I like to think that applies to us,
That when all of our leaves fall Our branches turn from green to white
And finally
When our trunk gets shoveled up
That we don’t end there
And that maybe
Maybe
We can flourish once again
But even if we can’t
Even if our energy truly is destroyed,
The animals will remember us
As the great oak who sheltered them from harm
The caterpillars will remember us
As the leaves which they ate from that sustained them,
And even the lumberjacks,
Who even though chopped thousands of trees
Stop from time to time and remember
How beautiful we all are.
Maybe when we truly leave,
Our energy leaves the earth,
But the earth always remembers our energy.

"The Parkway is a very significant part of the blue ridge mountains, we are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. People travel from all over just to see our home town and the breath-taking views that come with it. Boone would not be the same without the Parkway and all of the activities that come with it."
"I love hiking and experiencing the beauty of the Parkway. I have a lot of memories of wading in the New River with my family and hiking at Rough Ridge. I feel so lucky to live in a place of rich biological diversity and beauty."
"It means home. It means coming back to the people I love. Coming back to the mountains I love. It means that no matter where I am, the Blue Ridge Parkway will always be my home- the one place I truly feel free."
