Band FAQs
What does my child need for band each day?
They will need their instrument, band book, and a pencil every day.
What instrument should my child play?
The most successful band students have chosen their instrument based on which one calls to them the most. They may like the sound, the shape, the color, the way it feels… But making the choice for themselves (with support from their families) gives them ownership of their learning and pride in what they do.
If you already have an instrument you want your child to play, discuss with them if this is something they are interested in. Sometimes they feel forced into playing something they don’t like, causing them to quit or give up early in their learning.
You can take your child to a music store to test out instruments before making a final selection.
How much should my child practice?
Your band teacher will provide practice assignments and tips at each lesson to maximize practice time at home. There isn’t a specific number of minutes to practice each day, but the more they practice, the faster they improve! When students do not practice, it makes it harder for the rest of the band, because the band is a team and we make music together.
Can my child quit band if they don’t like it?
It is important to commit to band for the whole year. There will times where it is fun, and times where it will be hard. Just like any other class or skill, parent support is the most important way to help your child succeed.
It is also important to discuss with your child and their band teacher any problems or issues as they come up. If the band teacher knows what is bothering the student, they can better address the issue, and help them feel successful and have fun.
Transportation is an issue for us. Is there a way we can make sure my student is in band?
Band is now during the school day! Yay!
I want my child to be in band, but I’m not sure we can afford an instrument. What can I do?
Contact your band teacher with your concerns. They will do everything they can to make sure your child can participate in band.
I have a different question you haven’t answered.
Email your band teacher!
