A remote online notarization (RON) is an alternative option to the paper-based, in-person Notary experience. Check out the differences here.
Starting with the remote Notary and signer meeting online to the way a signer’s identity is confirmed, every part of a remote notarization happens in an electronic environment. For clients who are fairly savvy with technology, the entire process usually takes less than 15 minutes for a single document.
Notaries commissioned by the State of Washington are allowed to notarize documents online from clients living in 50 US states and anywhere in the world (RCW 42.45.120). Before requesting remote notarization, however, please check with the recipient of the document to ensure an electronic signature or remote notarization is acceptable. While RON is legal, there are some entities that will not accept remotely-notarized documents.
Audio-video conference will be recorded in compliance with the Washington law (WAC 308-30-330). The electronic record of an electronic notarial act must be maintained for a period of at least ten years from the date the notarial act was performed.
A person’s identity is verified online using two identity proofing methods: Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA) and Credential Analysis.
KBA requires the signer to answer a series of computer-generated questions based on the signer’s personal history, credit, and financial information. It will be 5 questions that the signer will only have a short period of time to answer (2 minutes). A signer must correctly answer 4 out of 5 questions to connect to the notary.
For credential analysis, the RON platform will scan the ID presented by the signer and analyze the information on the ID for authenticity.
Washington remote notaries are also allowed to use personal knowledge as an ID verification method.
