This tab explains where your student's grades will be coming from this year that will merge into one letter grade per grading period and a final letter grade at the end of the year. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions!
Math:
Worksheets/Activities: I will also be grading activities or worksheets that students work on in class. Usually, after I teach a lesson for the day, I will give a little worksheet called a Lesson Check to see how students are able to complete the objective. This will help me determine small groups and who may need extra practice during success or who needs to be challenged for a particular skill. I won't grade papers for accuracy on the first day we learn a lesson because learning takes time! :)
Tests: I will also have periodic tests but will let the students know in advance what will be expected of them on the test (what concepts will be tested on and sometimes even the style of question).
English Language Arts:
Writing: Students write in their writing notebooks every day. I will look over their writing to see if they are participating in class and see how their writing skills are coming along based on what we are learning in class.
Tests: I will give periodic tests mainly over language arts skills. Students will know in advance what they will be expected to know and do for the tests.
Application: Once we've learned/reviewed a skill (for example: punctuating sentences), I will expect to see that the students writing reflects those skills. Students may be counted off if their writing does not include specific skills that we've talked through and practiced.
Reading:
Responses to Reading: I will have students read a particular passage and answer a few comprehension questions about their reading. I will also have prompts that students use as they read individually. They will then be asked to explain what they discovered in their own book based on the prompt at the beginning.
Social Studies/Science:
Grades in these subjects will come from various activities we complete. Additionally, I will have students write to different questions or prompts that will reflect their overall understanding of a particular topic.
Conduct:
I will give other grades based on a student's classroom behavior. If they are on task, focused, and participating, then they will do great! If they are distracting others, keeping the class from learning, or not meeting our classroom expectations, they will get points taken away.
