Reading
WCS follows a 90-minute literacy block. I structure my block as follows:
I begin my block at the carpet where I do my daily skill instruction. I have a mentor text read aloud, where I introduce and invite discussion on the weekly skill. This is about a 20 minute process.
I differentiate students into four leveled reading groups, based on Fountas and Pinnell data. Those groups follow four, fifteen minute center rotations that include:
- Word Work
- Read to Self
- Guided Reading with teacher guidance
- Guided Skills/Work on Writing with teacher guidance
These pillars follow a similar outline to the Daily 5 model. The rotation block is about 60 minutes. For the remainder of the block, we practice Word Work skills from our Word Study curriculum and independent reading to utilize the skill from instruction.
