When Edgewood faculty and staff gathered to define the statement “We are Edgewood,” it was determined that four pillars make up our foundation for who we are. These pillars are: Maximize Student Learning, STEM, Wellness and Philanthropy. Our purpose is to educate students in a safe and positive environment. We are also committed to embedding PBL and STEM across all curricula. We recognize the importance of building positive relationships, prioritizing emotional, mental, and physical wellness, and taking care of ourselves and each other. We also are well known for all the philanthropic activities we do each year. Raising awareness and taking care of the needs around us is critical to our culture.
The culture at Edgewood Middle School has been established through servant leadership. The feeling someone has when they visit Edgewood is not by accident but comes from a longstanding belief in the greatness of the educators that surround the students of the building. Every decision and step taken within the walls of Edgewood has been intentional and strategically designed over many years. Principal JoElla Hauselman has set the standard of how to organize and integrate STEM education into the core curriculum and has leveraged her position to ensure that STEM is a priority of this building. Edgewood’s culture is driven by our mission to maximize student learning, serve our community through philanthropic endeavors and to aspire to be a model STEM middle school. The movement of Edgewood toward STEM has been determined by inviting the voices of our school community to provide input and feedback that guides our next steps to maximize learning. Edgewood is working to produce the next generation of innovators, collaborators and problem solvers.
Sustaining the culture of Edgewood can be challenging, however, we are a committed learning community working together to make our middle school a model for others to emulate. The curriculum and instructional support that comes from the building based STEM instructional coaches and Leadership Team helps ensure that our guarantees continue. Edgewood's communication to parents and the school community is evident by our weekly newsletter to parents, our social media presence, frequent news releases, media coverage and continued efforts to promote our STEM initiatives and student successes. Through these intentional efforts the community, parents and families get a lens into the classroom and STEM activities that their child is immersed in. This promotes a positive and healthy communication that keeps stakeholders pleased and well informed. Finally, the equitable offerings that Edgewood has for STEM education come from the fact that we are a public middle school within Warsaw Community Schools. All truly means all. Students that attend Edgewood have the full STEM experience and are provided opportunities to go deeper in their content understanding and exposure to STEM careers.
Decision-Making regards planning and implementation of the school's STEM program, which is the work of a school team, comprised of administrators and teachers, and includes the opportunity for feedback on the program by surveying 100% of the Edgewood staff. 100% of EMS staff is surveyed to seek feedback.
EMS Continuous Learning Plan
We have a regular bell schedule, a bell schedule for synchronous eLearning days and expectations for asynchronous eLearning days.
The regular bell schedule allows students to meet in every class on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Wednesday and Thursday are block days allowing all classes to meet for approximately 90 minutes during one of these days.
The synchronous bell schedule is designed for students to follow “in person” instruction virtually from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Students would simply click on the link provided by the teacher and follow their 7 period day sequence of classes.
For asynchronous instruction, we have the following expectations:
WCS eLearning Policy
All eLearning days are 7 period days
If we miss a Wednesday - eLearning would be 7 periods and odd block would move to Friday
If we miss a Thursday, eLearning would be 7 periods and even block would be Friday
If we miss both Wednesday and Thursday - we will all be rested for Friday and Friday would be 7 periods.
Assignments should take a student no more than 20 minutes for each class.
Assignments will count as a 20% grade if graded.
Students will have two school days (when school resumes) to complete an eLearning assignment for full credit.
Planned STEM Learning Schedule
Warsaw Community Schools invested in sending the three secondary schools to the University of Virginia to train in the Darden School of Business to improve school performance. Part of this training included the creation of a PLC Roadmap, committing to how each school would use the late arrival Professional Learning Communities collaboration time to move the school forward.
You must begin with the end in mind, the purpose of the turnaround initiative. Edgewood Middle School’s purpose is that “All Edgewood stakeholders will work together to conquer our challenges, maximize student learning and raise our state ranking to become the best middle school in the state of Indiana." Once we establish our purpose, we build the PLC roadmap to accomplish our purpose.
The roadmap prioritizes our efforts to maximize student learning and to embed PBL and STEM integrated across the curriculum within our interdisciplinary teams.
Integrated Lesson Plan:
ELA 7 & Computer Science
Warsaw Community Schools is committed to creating and supporting Professional Learning Communities in our schools. A majority of all certified staff members trained in Lincolnshire with the Solution Tree Institute. Powerful collaborative teams are the fundamental building block of a professional learning community and a critical component in building a collaborative culture. The PLC culture is supported by research and endorsed by educational organizations at all levels.
Our corporation has built in time each Monday morning for PLC groups to meet and work collaboratively together. These late arrivals and how they are to be used are outlined in the PLC Roadmap.
In addition to the PLC late arrival opportunities to collaborate, the master schedule at Edgewood is built to give PLC teams common prep periods. Furthermore, the lunch schedule is also designed to provide common lunch times for PLC members.

Textbook Rental & Consumable Fees
Textbook Rental & Consumable Fee
In an effort to sustain our Project Lead the Way courses, we had to adjust the textbook rental/and consumable fees for these classes and other electives in order to be able to sustain and continue to offer these courses. These adjustments had to be taken to the Curriculum Council for approval. Below is a description of the courses and the justification for adjusting the fees. This was presented and approved by the Curriculum Council in December of 2021.
Our PLTW classes are also very popular. The TBR fees we are charging do not cover the cost of the materials for the courses and again we are paying for these items out of the instructional supply line.
Medical Detectives: 220 students took this course at Edgewood in 2020-2021 We spent an additional $2061.4 above and beyond the TBR from our instructional supply line.
PLTW:
Automation and Robotics: $20.00. In 2021-2022 PLTW upgraded VEX robots at a cost of about $15,000 per building. PLTW will no longer support the other VEX robotic equipment that is obsolete. We had 145 students take this course at Edgewood this year. We also have a robotics club and robotics competitions that we host in Warsaw. Replacing the VEX robots is imperative. We will seek additional instructional supply funds to help cover the cost of the upgrade for the robots.
Design & Modeling $8.38
Medical Detectives $15.63
App Creator $17.22
Computer Science for Innovators and Makers $19.04
Edgewood has conducted a variety of student surveys to analyze student interest and attitudes toward STEM, STEM careers, and science. Students complete the TOSRA (Test of Science Related Attitudes) during the fall and spring and will continue to take this survey each fall during science class. Data is then analyzed to adjust instruction and revise curriculum maps. An example of the changes made this past year would be the exploration of adding courses to our PLTW offerings that might align better with student interest and community needs.

2022 STEM School Board Presentation
Edgewood shared our work toward earning STEM accreditation with the board on November 15, 2021. At that time we had just submitted our first application and we brought a parent, three teachers, an administrator and a student to share our current STEM efforts to become a STEM certified school. Both administrators and a teacher then presented an update to the board at the May 16, 2022 board meeting, hosted at Edgewood. At that time we explained to the board that a core team would be working this summer to update our website and complete the STEM application following the updated rubric from the IDOE.

Abbi Richcreek Resume
This is the resume of our building STEM coach, showing her many qualifications she uses to help with STEM instructional support.
As noted in the five years of master schedules, Edgewood has consistently offered several Project Lead the Way classes. Over the course of time, we have increased our PLTW course offerings. Additional staff have been certified to teach PLTW classes in an effort to meet the high demand.
Students enrolled in our STEM programs include our special education students, a balance between girls and boys taking PLTW classes, representation of all minority groups at Edgewood, and economically disadvantaged students. No student is excluded from the PLTW course offerings.
As evidenced in the master schedules, STEM time is protected from pull outs because these courses are part of the daily curriculum. STEM courses are given the same instructional protection as the four core subjects and other electives at Edgewood. STEM elective enrollment mirrors school demographics.
