FRENCH III
Castle High School
Mr. Nicolas Costeur – Room 214
8 FREE College Credits are available through Ivy Tech
COURSE OUTLINE
French III focuses on reinforcing and completing materials from French I and II, while preparing students for French IV. New materials will be added but previously learned materials are constantly reviewed and reinforced during class and with guided “self evaluation” work. A variety of grammatical structures are covered. We start to individualize grammar instruction according to the needs of each student.
French III covers art and music as well as national and/or regional events when they occur. French III also introduces some historic elements. Students have opportunities to give oral presentations about selected readings. Readings are selected to acquaint students with many facets of the French-speaking world. Students will be presented with different media (movies, radio, newspapers articles, magazines, internet, etc.) in order to develop proficiency in the four skills areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. We will also work with different applications using students’ Chromebooks. Connections with other school subjects are made whenever possible to help students think globally. The class is conducted in French as much as possible, depending on the level of comprehension of students; very important grammatical concepts are introduced in English to ensure thorough comprehension. On Tuesdays and Thursdays however the class is conducted entirely in French and all communication should be in French.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will increase their reading and listening comprehension. Students WILL NOT understand every word that they read or hear and this is NOT necessary. They will listen for general meaning by making predictions and recalling cognates. Students will also increase their ability to communicate in French through speaking and writing. By integrating culture into the program, it is hoped that in the process students will develop cultural awareness and become more accepting and non-judgmental of other cultures. They will realize that the French language represents people of various cultures. By the end of the school year students should be able to use, or at least recognize, most of the French tenses and grammatical structures in order to advance to French IV where the program focuses on literature and history.
COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to participate actively during class. Participation is vital to the student’s progress in learning French. They can do this by being prompt in their responses and by trying to use as much French as possible during the class period. Mistakes when participating are not “negative”; they are part of the learning process! Students are expected to do homework, translations and worksheets in order to be prepared for each class as well as exams and quizzes. They are expected to demonstrate comprehension of the readings. This is possible when they read in class as well as at home and come prepared every time a reading is presented. As part of French III, students will complete at least one project during the year.
Furthermore, they are expected to be able to make an oral presentation of two minutes in French about a selected reading.
It is strongly suggested that students read, listen to French music, watch French movies with subtitles when possible (ask Mr. Costeur, lots of French movies are available at the local video store or on the different streaming platforms).
Each student is responsible for contacting Mr. Costeur or checking their Google classroom for missed assignments. (See also the school policy about it). Students are also expected to bring to each class the following texts and their notes.
·“T'es branché? 3" EMC World Languages + Workbook and Chromebook (to access all the digital resources offered).
·I also strongly recommend French / English dictionary and 501 FrenchVerbs (which will last forever!!!)
·Students will also keep a folder with their work, vocabulary lists etc.
.I strongly suggest the regular consultation of my daily updated personal website which contains lots of helpful resources: https://sites.google.com/warrick.k12.in.us/francaisaveccosteur/home
Reminder: You may NOT record (video or audio) the class without my previous consent. You also need to comply with the new Indiana law regarding the use of electronic devices.
