From Mrs. Hopkins

May 3, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It has been an exciting week at Oakland Elementary.  Monday we welcomed our incoming kindergartners and their parents at our Kinder Readiness Night.  On Tuesday, we recognized students who received proficient and distinguished on last year's KSA.  It was exciting to celebrate their successes.  Wednesday was our annual Kindergarten Derby.  Which is one of my favorite events each year.

Kentucky state testing began on Thursday for our 3rd through 6th graders. Our students have been working hard to demonstrate all they have learned this year, and we are very proud of them!

Next week is Staff Appreciation Week.  If you have an opportunity, please take a moment to complete the Google Form within the newsletter to thank a staff member for their hard work and dedication to their job and our students.  I know they would be appreciative of the kind words.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Jeanie Hopkins

Help Us Ensure State and Federal Funds

By completing the household income form, our district is able to ensure funding from the state and federal government.  These funds assist us with employee salaries, our family resource centers, curriculum and school supplies, free lunch programs, and much more.  Please complete the form by scanning the QR code with your phone or going to https://www.myschoolapps.com/.  Thank you!

Transportation Information

Kindergarten Parents - Please make sure your student has their vest on each day.  Kindergarten students must have an adult present with them when at the bus stop.  For afternoon arrival, please have an adult present at the bus stop.  The bus driver cannot release kindergarten students without an adult to pick them up.

Transportation Changes - If you need to change your student's transportation, please call the school before 2:30pm.  This allows us enough time to get a note to your student and to inform your student.  You can also sent a note with your student if you need to change their normal transportation.

Help our Car Rider Line Run Smoothly

Here are a few tips to help our car rider line run smoothly:

United Way - 211

United Way of Southern Kentucky’s (UWSK) 2-1-1 program is a great resource for those who need a little extra help. No matter the needs such as housing/shelter, food, utilities assistance, support groups, employee assistance and more, UWSK’s 2-1-1 team is available to help connect area residents with available community resources. Upon receiving calls from community members,  the 2-1-1 team accesses various databases of resources and connects the callers to the appropriate agencies to receive assistance. To access the line, simply dial 2-1-1.

Affordable Connectivity Program

ACP: Federal program lowers cost of internet connectivity for Kentucky families

The Affordable Connectivity Program provides enrolled households with up to $30 per month for new or existing internet service and a one-time discount of up to $100 for purchasing a tablet, laptop or desktop computer. Eligibility requirements for households include:

Kentucky is NOW hovering right at 50% participation of eligible families! Let’s continue pushing.

Congress will need to reconfirm this funding soon. Legislative members need to hear from Kentucky that this funding directly to families has had an immediate impact. Here is an easy-to-use “call” tool (savetheacp.org) that directs the public to call their Senators, asking that they continue to fund the ACP. When someone calls the number, they’ll hear a recording with instructions and talking points for their call. This tool allows us to track the number of calls made to Senate offices.

More Details:

Students in the household attend a school participating in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Community Eligibility Program (CEP), in which all students receive free or reduced-price meals;

The household participates in government assistance such as SNAP, Medicaid or other programs;

The household income is within 200% of the federal poverty level; or

Households in which anyone receives a federal Lifeline benefit.

For more information about qualifications, visit the Affordable Connectivity Program “Do I Qualify?" webpage. For more information about the program, visit the KDE Affordable Connectivity Program website.
