This course is discussion-oriented, so participation and attendance are required! Make sure you have completed all of the readings before class so that you are ready to chat with classmates or respond to various writing prompts. Five times throughout the semester (roughly once a week) you should annotate a reading--ask a question, make an observation, or respond to a classmate's annotation. This must be completed before 8:00am on class day so I have time to review these in planning the discussion.
You will be participating in both hands-on activities and outdoor experiences. The five practica are centered on the following themes: 1) Native Lands, 2) Phenomenology, 3) Field Collection and Mobile GIS, 4) Analyzing Historical Maps and Public Archaeology, and 5) Plantations and Historical Memory in Asheville and Swannanoa. For our outdoor experiences, we will be visiting several places on campus as well as heading to Asheville and other parts of Western North Carolina. Each Practicum is worth 10% or 50 points.
Students will work with me to develop a final creative Story Map through ArcGIS online. ArcGIS StoryMaps allow you to integrate geographic data with text, photos, and videos to create interactive narratives that are easily shared with the public. Your project is grounded in spatial analysis, or human behavior and its spatial form. There should be a visual component which includes a map, in addition to a bibliography. You will submit a proposal (25 points) and do a final presentation (25 points) on your Story Map the last week of class or the Finals period. It is fine with me if you want to work in groups, but make sure the final project reflects contributions from everyone.
Weather permitting, there will be two opportunities to gain extra credit through Saturday excavations at Boyd Cabin. Details will be provided on these excursions once they are planned.
