Reading for pleasure plays a vital role in the academic and personal development of students. It strengthens literacy, deepens vocabulary, and nurtures critical thinking—all of which are essential for success across the curriculum. Beyond this, reading widely and regularly helps students develop empathy, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. At Warden Park, we believe that fostering a reading culture enriches not only achievement but also character, helping our students thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
A summer reading challenge is a powerful way to keep students engaged, curious, and intellectually active over the long break. It helps maintain reading fluency and comprehension, preventing the common ‘summer slide’ in literacy skills. More importantly, it encourages students to explore new genres, discover personal interests, and develop independent reading habits. By making reading enjoyable and purposeful during the holidays, the challenge supports academic progress and builds a strong foundation for the new school year. We have included some recommended reading for students in Years 8 -11.
