On January 22, 2025, the Wapsie Valley FFA Chapter traveled to Des Moines with eight members to visit the Iowa State Capitol. This trip provided a valuable opportunity for our members to experience state government firsthand and learn more about the legislative process. While at the Capitol, members met with State Representative Chad Ingels. During their conversation, students asked thoughtful questions about how bills are introduced, debated, amended, and ultimately passed into law. Representative Ingels explained the steps involved in the legislative process and shared insight into why certain bills may take longer to move forward, helping members better understand the complexity of government decision-making.

Our National FFA Convention trip began with an exciting stop at the John Deere Pavilion, where we explored the history and future of agricultural innovation. From cutting-edge equipment to interactive exhibits, we gained a deeper appreciation for how technology continues to shape the agriculture industry. After our visit, we traveled to Indianapolis to attend the National FFA Organization National FFA Convention. Throughout the week, we participated in inspiring general sessions that featured motivational speakers, recognized outstanding members from across the country, and celebrated the accomplishments of FFA chapters nationwide. The energy in the arena was unforgettable, as thousands of blue jackets came together to represent their states and share their passion for agriculture. We also spent time exploring the Expo, where we connected with colleges, agricultural companies, and industry leaders.
Attending the IGNITE, AMPLIFY, and TRANSFORM conferences hosted by the Iowa FFA Association gives FFA members the opportunity to grow as leaders while connecting with members from across the state. At these conferences, we participate in interactive workshops, leadership sessions, and activities that focus on communication, teamwork, and personal development. Each conference is designed for different grade levels, allowing members to learn skills that match where they are in their FFA journey. These experiences help us build confidence, meet new people, and bring ideas back to improve our chapter
Attending the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., is an incredible opportunity for FFA members to grow as leaders while representing our chapter on a national level. Hosted by the National FFA Organization, this conference focuses on personal growth, service, and developing leadership skills through workshops, discussions, and hands-on activities. Members also have the chance to explore our nation’s capital, visit historical landmarks, and connect with FFA members from across the country. The experience helps us build confidence, strengthen our leadership abilities, and bring new ideas back to benefit our chapter and community.
FFA members from our chapter participate in the Iowa State Fair each August by showcasing both animal and static projects that highlight their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) work and agricultural skills. Members exhibit livestock such as cattle, sheep, and swine, while others display static exhibits in areas like agricultural mechanics, horticulture, and communication that qualify through county competitions. In addition to exhibiting, selected students serve as Grandstand Ushers and Free Stage Attendants through the Iowa FFA Association, assisting with events, working with fair staff, and developing leadership and professionalism skills while representing our local chapter.
Every year, our Plant and Soils Science class attends the annual soils judging event through FFA. This hands-on competition gives students the opportunity to take what they’ve learned in the classroom and apply it in real-world settings. At the event, members evaluate different soil profiles, identify soil horizons, determine texture, slope, drainage, and land capability, and make recommendations for proper land use. Soils judging challenges students to pay attention to the small details beneath the surface and understand how those factors impact agriculture, crop production, and environmental management. This experience not only strengthens their knowledge of soil science, but also builds critical thinking, teamwork, and decision-making skills. It’s a valuable opportunity for students to dive deeper into the complexities of soil and gain a greater appreciation for its importance in agriculture and everyday life.
In February 2026, three of our chapter members — Cole Munk, Ryker Oberle, and Brinley Schellhorn — stepped up to run for district office. Each of them demonstrated outstanding leadership, dedication, and courage by putting themselves forward to represent our chapter at the district level. We are especially proud to share that Ryker Oberle earned a spot on the ballot for Northwest Sub-District Vice President. This accomplishment reflects his hard work, character, and commitment to serving others. Running for office requires confidence, preparation, and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone. Cole, Ryker, and Brinley represented our chapter with professionalism and pride throughout the entire process. No matter the outcome, we are incredibly proud of all three members for their leadership, initiative, and dedication to making a positive impact within our organization.
